Running Zim Desktop Wiki for Windows

Requirements

Requires a recent Windows environment (Windows 2000 or Windows XP or newer). All Perl and GTK dependencies are included with the application.

Requires 23MB of storage space to download and an additional 66MB to install.

Installation

Download the latest package from the Downloads section of this web site and run it.

On the second page of the installer, select whether you want a Desktop Install or Portable Install

A Desktop Install will (by default):

  • Create Start Menu and Desktop Shortcuts.
  • Create a file association so that .zim files are launched in Zim.
  • Create registry keys and script necessary for an Uninstall process.

A Portable Install will do none of that, but instead will

  • Store configuration and document data in the same folder as the application, instead of in Application Data and My Documents.
  • On first run, automatically create a blank notebook in Notebooks\Main under the application's folder, if the notebook doesn't already exist.
  • Always open Main notebook initially, so you don't have to browse for it.

If you pick the Portable Install, be sure to pick the correct destination folder on the next screen!

If your thumbdrive is plugged in and it given the drive letter E:, then browse to E:\. Zim Desktop Wiki will be automatically added to the folder path and you can click "Install" to finish the process.

Starting Zim

Desktop Install:

Double-click the shortcut on your desktop, or browse to Start -> All Programs -> Zim Desktop Wiki -> Zim.
or
Browse to any folder containing a notebook and double-click notebook.zim.
